First grade enjoyed a virtual visit from the traveling naturalist! We learned about migration, hibernation, and other ways animals here survive the winter. This was the perfect way to wrap up our reading lessons on how animals survive!

As a reminder, Mr. Watson sent this message out last week about a switch in our e-learning day for tomorrow. A significant number of our staff are getting their 2nd COVID vaccine on Monday, February 15th. Because side effects are more likely after the 2nd dose, we're going to flop our Remote Learning Day currently scheduled for Friday, February 12th and make Tuesday, February 16th a Remote Learning Day instead. Friday, February 12th will now become a normal In-Person Learning Day. If a large number staff are absent due to side effects, we would not have the staff/subs to open the building on the 16th. We would rather be proactive than put everyone in scramble mode to find childcare, ect. the morning of the 16th. Friday, Feb. 12th – In-Person Learning Monday, Feb. 15th President’s Day (No School) - the day most staff get their 2nd vaccine Tuesday, Feb. 16th – Remote Learning Day Wednesday, Feb. 17th – resume In-Person Learning

Did you know that BHES now has access to myON, a Renaissance program that offers thousands of books for our students to read on their own? They can also be read to them! And once the student is done reading the book, they are able to take an AR test on the story (1st grade and up). Also available is the News portion of myON, which includes 5 new articles a day according to the students’ ability levels. Check out this short video to learn more: https://p.widencdn.net/5or7cb/Getting-Started-with-myON-News!

Looking ahead, we want to try and minimize our chances of being shut down due to COVID-19 and forced to go fully remote learning. With that being said, our current return plan from Christmas Break will be similar to what we did after Thanksgiving Break. The first 3 days (1/4 – 1/6) will be Remote Learning Days. We will return to In-Person Learning on Thursday (1/7). We were originally scheduled to have an E-Learning Day on Friday, Jan. 8th. We will forgo the E-Learning Day on the 8th and that will be a normal In-Person Learning Day. I hope everyone enjoys the break. You all deserve it! Monday, Jan. 4th Remote Learning Day Tuesday, Jan. 5th Remote Learning Day Wednesday, Jan. 6th Remote Learning Day Thursday, Jan. 7th In-Person Learning Day Friday, Jan. 8th In-Person Learning Day

Dear BHES Families, Please read the following information very carefully. This pertains to updated information regarding quarantining after potential exposure due to close contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 Please note that the CDC currently recommends a quarantine period of 14 days. However, the CDC and the Illinois Dept. of Public Health have agreed to the following options to shorten the quarantine period. These are the acceptable alternatives: • Quarantine can end after Day 10 without testing and if student has no symptoms. • Quarantine can end after Day 7 if the student tests negative and if no symptoms were reported during daily monitoring. The test must be taken within 48 hours before the time of planned quarantine discontinuation, but quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than Day 8. In other words, the earliest they could test would be on Day 6. With both options the following additional criteria through day 14 must be met: • correct and consistent mask use (including within homes), • social distancing, • hand and cough hygiene, • environmental cleaning and disinfection, • avoiding crowds, • ensuring adequate indoor ventilation, • monitoring for symptoms of COVID-19 illness, and • minimizing contact with persons at increased risk for severe illness, including vulnerable and congregate populations. Monitoring can be conducted using any method acceptable by the local public health authorities and can include self-monitoring using an approved checklist of signs and symptoms. Please use the potential symptoms listed on the Teacherease daily check-in as a guide. BHRA/BHJH parents: Please call Nurse Kelly if you have any questions about these new quarantine options 217.759.7291 BHES parents: Please call Nurse Amy if you have any questions about these new quarantine options 217.759.7251
