Today’s fun fact is: Do you know that we have been eating cherries since the Stone Age? Ancient Roman soldiers used to spread cherries everywhere they went because they would throw the cherry pits on the side of road as they marched. There are over 1000 different kinds of cherries. Although cherries were already in North America when Europeans came over, the kinds we eat from stores arrived in the 1600s. The farthest record for the farthest anyone has spit a cherry pit is 93 feet.

We are getting so close to being able to add another instructor and more teenage interns for our week at Camp Invention (June 26-30)! Use the link https://mbsy.co/6ngPMB to save $30, along with the codes SIBLOVE30 to save $30 off an additional sibling, SIBLOVE40 to save $40 off a third sibling, and ALUMNI25 to save $25 if you've attended Camp before (all of these have no expiration date but can't be stacked)!
Simply call 1-800-968-4332 to register. We can't wait to make a mini robot, learn about entrepreneurship, and have an Invention Celebration with your students!
Construction on the new football field is progressing and we're so excited!
PLEASE stay off the football field until construction is complete. The crew is working hard at getting everything perfectly level. Please talk to your kiddos about staying off the field as well. Even the smallest footsteps leave imprints that must be fixed before they continue. Every time they have to relevel, it sets us back.
We can't wait to see you under the lights this fall!

The oldest person to have ever finished a marathon was 100 years old. The person actually didn’t start running until he was 89. It takes 200 muscles to take a step when you run. Half of all the animals that live in the rainforest live in the canopy. The Amazon River that runs through the rainforest is the second longest river in the world but carries the more water than any other river. The rainforest is so thick that when it rains it can take ten minutes for the rain drops to make it from the top of the trees to the ground.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that shrimp are decapod crustaceans? Being a decapod means that they have 10 pairs of walking legs and being a crustacean means they have no backbone and a hard shell on the outside of their body. Sometimes shrimp are also called prawns, but there is actual no difference between the two. We catch and eat shrimp by baking them, boiling them, frying them, grilling them, and even eating them raw. It is estimated that the average American eats 4 pounds of shrimp each year.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that nine is the largest single digit number in our counting system? The sum of the digits of any multiple of nine will equal nine. If you rearrange the digits of any number divisible by nine it will still be divisible by nine. If you take an existing number and put a nine into it, it will make it into a number divisible by 9. September is the 9th month and is the only month that has the number of letters equal to its number as a month

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that in ancient Jedi history the color of a lightsaber had a special meaning? Originally blue lightsabers were used by the warrior-like Guardians, green was used by Jedi who focused on politics and diplomacy, and yellow was for Sentinels who worked in areas not focused on the Force. Eventually however Jedi were able to choose the color of the sabers and the choices they used expanded to purple, red, white, yellow-green, and even black. Lightsabers get their color from the special stone used to make it called a Kyber crystal.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that there are two species of Dandelions and they are native to Europe, Asia, and the Americas? Even though they are weeds, all parts of a dandelion are edible and are used in medicines in different places around the world. Some ways to recognize a dandelion is by its bright yellow flower, sharp looking leaves, and white parachute like seeds. Dandelions can live 5 to 10 years and grow using a taproot which makes them really hard to get rid of once they start to grow in your yard.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that the month of May might be named after the Roman Goddess of growing plants, Maia? In the old Roman calendar, May was the third month of the year and like today is a spring month in the Northern Hemisphere. However, if you go to the Southern Hemisphere, May is a fall month so instead of plants growing they are starting to die before winter comes. May is the only month on the calendar that does not begin or end on the same day of the week as any other month. Emerald is the birthstone of May as it is a symbol for rebirth.
Reminder! If your student will not be attending school for the day, please make sure you call the office and let us know. Please call us by 9am each day your student is absent. (A ClassDojo message is not enough since those sometimes go unread until later in the day).

You can also contact Mrs. Carpenter at acarpenter@bismarck.k12.il.us with any questions. See you there!
We will be holding our annual Laura K. Girton Fun Run on May 12th. Families will be welcome to come watch this event to cheer on their student’s effort. Students will be running around the building, so we need spectators to stay clear of their path to help keep all students safe.
We will be holding on last lunch on the lawn on Friday May 19th. We will be eating lunches on the north side of the building next to our playground. Parking will be along Chicago Street and in our east side parking lot. If the weather does not cooperate we will unfortunately not have a make up date.
The winning class for our Spirit Stick and for meeting expectations for arrival in the gym during the morning was Mrs. Nixon’s class.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that the first zipper as we know it was created in 1913. An earlier version was invented in 1851 but was never really used. Zippers were originally called Separable Fasteners and were created by an electrical engineer named Gideon Sundback. A zipper is made of two sets of teeth that are linked together or separated by the pullable part. Zippers can be made out of both plastic and metal and can come in pretty much every color. Before the zipper most clothing relied on buttons, tied lace, or was made not to need to be joined together.
