Meet Michelle Schaumburg!
Hometown: Fairfield, IL
Who was one of your favorite teachers growing up and why?
Mrs. Best, my 5th grade teacher. She used a lot of fun activities to keep us motivated and engaged, including history scavenger hunts, a unit on medieval times that included fun projects and a parent night; being a “teaching assistant” that could teach a lesson to the class as a reward, and an awesome treasure box full of cool things. She was fun, but we also knew she meant business in her classroom.
What is your favorite activity to do outside of school?
I love staying in and having a “popcorn-movie night” with my family. 🍿
If you weren’t doing your current job, what other job would you want to do?
Something with music or theater! 🎭 Or an author! 📖
What is a fun fact about you?
I love to sing and I can play the piano and the trumpet. 🎤🎹🎺

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that shoe laces have been around for as long as shoes have? The oldest pair of shoes ever found are from 5,500 years ago and had leather laces. In your life time you’ll spend around 2 weeks of your life just tying your shoes. The end of shoe laces are often covered in plastic or metal to keep the rest of the lace from unraveling.

Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that hippos do not need to brush their teeth? One reason is that their large teeth grind together enough to remove any tartar or build up on them. Another reason is because they live near birds that will pick things out of their teeth for them.

Red is one of the threeOn the rainbow, red has to be the fastest color because it has the longest distance to travel from one end to the other and still get to the same place at the same time as the other colors. Today’s fun fact is: Did you know that most lemons trees produce fruit all year long? Lemons are actually a hybrid between two other fruits called the citron and lime. One table spoon of lemon juice has just 3 Calories in it. Although lemons are really tart to eat all on their own, they are great to add to other foods and when baking because they have a lot vitamin C, carbohydrates, and fiber. They also contain potassium, vitamin B, and even some protein. The acid in lemon juice can be used to keep other fruit from turning brown.

One type of mammal that lays eggs is the duck-billed platypus which many of us are more familiar with. Another egg laying mammal is the echidna, which is an animal that sort of looks like a miniature anteater with quills.

Today’s fun fact is:Did you know that Thursday was named after the Norse god, Thor. So really it should be Thorsday. Also there are a few differences between the Norse version of Thor and the superhero version. The Norse version had red hair but Marvel always shows him with blond hair. The Norse Thor’s hammer is just a regular sized hammer, while the Marvel version has a huge one. The Marvel Thor can fly why spinning his hammer, but the Norse version got around in his chariot pulled by his two goats.

Pencils can even write in space, upside down, and underwater. Before we had rubber erasers for pencils, some people used a rolled up piece of white bread.

Today’s fun fact is: For a short time people were able to send kids in the mail. In 1913 the Postal Office started the parcel post service for packages over 4 pounds. Between 1913 and 1915 there are at least 7 cases where parents sent their children somewhere by mail, most often for them to visit their grandparents. Buying at stamp seemed to be cheaper than buying a train ticket. The Post Master general eventually banned being able send people in the mail.
